Printmaking, Lettering
Sally Castle

Sally enjoys experimental self directed work as well as a variety of commissions using lettering and illustration: books, maps, metal screens and standing stones. Most recently she has illustrated two books and a giant-size lino cut print for the Carrington Building.

Words: both seen and heard, inspire Sally to create lettering using mixed media, taking the language taken out of context. She also draws and paints buildings or interestingly odd things. Projects and commissions often combine lettering and illustration: she has designed/illustrated/lettered poetry books, maps, memorial plaques, carved lettering in stone, wood and metal screens for a sensory garden.

She has rediscovered linocut printing and her prints have been described: "…your print of Reading conferred onto it the character of the Shell Guides, the world of Piper and Betjeman and I thought it most refreshing. People just don't make prints like this any more." www.sallycastle.co.uk

Sally Castle enjoys taking part in the WST because it is great opportunity to meet the people who buy her work; over the years she has got to know some regulars who come on the trail every year as well as new people interested in art. She also enjoys meeting and talking to children/students who are keen to develop their own personal art experience/education. Sally also finds it very helpful to network together with other local artists — working in a studio can become quite isolated and the trail provides an opportunity for problem sharing, practical advice and of course the social side is good too!
